Double Cleansing: What It Is and Why Korean Skincare Swears By It

Double cleansing is one of the foundational techniques in Korean skincare, and it's the first thing I correct when a client tells me their skin still feels dirty, congested, or dull no matter how well they think they're washing their face. It's simple: two cleansers, back to back, each doing a job the other can't.

What Is Double Cleansing?

Double cleansing means washing your face twice in one sitting, using two different types of cleansers. The first is an oil-based cleanser that dissolves makeup, SPF, and the oil-based buildup that accumulates on skin throughout the day. The second is a water-based cleanser that removes sweat, dirt, and anything left behind by the first step.

A single cleanser, even a good one, usually can't do both jobs well. Oil-based residue needs an oil-based solvent to break it down; water-based cleansers alone tend to just push that residue around rather than lifting it off.

"Every product you apply after cleansing is going on top of residue instead of clean skin, unless you do this first."

Why It Matters

Skipping the first cleanse doesn't just leave a bit of makeup behind, it means every product you apply afterward, from serum to moisturizer, is going on top of residue instead of clean skin. That's a major reason people feel like their routine isn't working: the products are good, but they're never actually reaching the skin.

Double cleansing done right also reduces the temptation to over scrub or over exfoliate to compensate for underlying buildup, which protects your barrier rather than damaging it.

The Two Steps

Step One

Oil-Based Cleanse

Use the Corthe Dermo Essential Cleansing Oil as your first cleanse. This is the exact product I use in my own double cleanse every night, nothing removes SPF as thoroughly without disrupting the barrier. Massage into completely dry skin for about 60 seconds, then rinse.

Step Two

Water-Based Cleanse

Follow immediately with the Dermathod Moist Morning Touch Foam Cleanser, my recommendation when clients tell me their skin feels tight after washing, or the KRX Gentle Enzyme Milk Cleanser for anyone who hates foaming textures.

When to Double Cleanse

Double cleanse at night, always, you're removing a full day of SPF, makeup, and environmental buildup. In the morning, a single gentle cleanse is usually enough unless you slept in a heavy overnight treatment or your skin tends to be oily.

Who Should Double Cleanse?

  • Anyone who wears daily SPF (which should be everyone)
  • Anyone who wears makeup
  • Oily or acne-prone skin, where residue contributes directly to clogged pores and breakouts
  • Anyone whose products don't seem to be absorbing or performing the way they should

If your skin is very dry, sensitive, or barrier-compromised, you can still double cleanse, just make sure the second cleanser is genuinely gentle, and skip it on nights your skin feels reactive.

Common Double Cleansing Mistakes

  • Using a harsh, stripping second cleanser that undoes the gentleness of the oil step
  • Rushing the oil cleanse, it needs a full 60 seconds of massage to properly break down SPF and makeup
  • Double cleansing in the morning when it isn't needed, which can over-strip the skin
  • Skipping the oil step and only using a foaming cleanser, which leaves residue behind

FAQ

Do I really need to double cleanse?
If you wear SPF or makeup, yes, a single cleanser typically can't fully remove both oil-based and water-based buildup.

Is double cleansing bad for oily skin?
No, oily and acne-prone skin often benefit most, since leftover oil-based residue is a common driver of clogged pores.

Can double cleansing dry out my skin?
Only if the second cleanser is too harsh. Choose a gentle, non-stripping formula for step two.

Do I need to double cleanse every day?
At night, yes. In the morning, a single gentle cleanse is usually enough.
