The Skin Edit — Texture & Bumps
Large Pores
Why they happen, and what actually makes them look smaller
By Lindsey Rapp · Licensed Esthetician · 4 Min Read
Large pores are one of the most common frustrations I hear in the studio, and one of the most misunderstood. Pore size is largely genetic, you cannot permanently shrink a pore, but you absolutely can make them look dramatically smaller with the right routine.
The Science
Why Pores Look Large
Pore size is determined by genetics, but pores appear larger when they're stretched by trapped oil and dead skin, when skin loses elasticity with age, and when oil production is high enough to keep pores visibly open. This is why pores tend to look most noticeable on the nose, cheeks, and forehead, the areas with the most oil glands.

Don't Skip Moisturizer
Skipping moisturizer to control oil is one of the most common pore-related mistakes. Dehydrated skin often overcompensates by producing more oil, which stretches pores further. A properly hydrated, balanced complexion tends to show smaller-looking pores over time, not larger ones.
Prevention
Sun Protection Matters More Than You'd Think
UV exposure breaks down collagen and elastin, the very structures that keep pores looking tight. Over time, sun damage is one of the biggest drivers of enlarged-looking pores, which makes daily SPF a genuine pore-minimizing step, not just an anti-aging one.
Myths
What Doesn't Work
- — Pore strips, they remove surface debris but do nothing for pore appearance long term
- — Cold water rinses, a popular myth with no real effect on pore size
- — Harsh astringents, which strip the skin and often trigger more oil production
- — Skipping exfoliation entirely, which lets buildup accumulate and stretch pores further

Can you permanently shrink pores? No, pore size is largely genetic and fixed, but consistent exfoliation and hydration can make them look dramatically smaller.
Do pores get bigger with age? They can appear larger as skin loses elasticity and collagen, which is why sun protection and collagen-supporting ingredients help.
Does drinking water help minimize pores?Overall hydration supports skin balance, but topical hydration and consistent exfoliation have a much more direct effect on pore appearance.
How often should I exfoliate for large pores?A few times a week is usually enough. Daily exfoliation can backfire by irritating skin and increasing oil production.
