Puffy Eyes and Under-Eye Bags

What actually causes it, and the routine an esthetician uses

Puffy eyes and under-eye bags are one of the most common concerns clients bring to me, and one of the most misunderstood. Most people reach for a heavy cream and expect it to fix everything, when the real fix depends on knowing what's actually causing the puffiness in the first place.

Why It Happens

The Under-Eye Area Puffs and Bags for Different Reasons

The skin under your eyes is thinner than anywhere else on your face, with blood vessels sitting closer to the surface. As we age, we naturally lose some of the fat and collagen support underneath, which can create a hollow look next to what appears as puffiness. Fluid retention, allergies, poor sleep, and salt intake can all cause temporary puffiness, while genetics and aging tend to drive the more persistent, structural kind.

The eye area is thin, has no oil glands, and shows both dehydration and structural change faster than anywhere else on the face.

The Distinction

Puffiness vs. Bags: Not the Same Thing

Puffiness tends to be temporary, swelling that comes and goes with sleep, allergies, or sodium intake. Under-eye bags are more structural, caused by weakening tissue and fat displacement that builds gradually over time. Temporary puffiness responds well to cold and lymphatic drainage. Structural bags respond better to consistent, long-term ingredient support like peptides and collagen-supporting actives.

Application

How to Apply for Best Results

  • Use your ring finger, the lightest natural pressure of any finger, on this delicate skin
  • Pat gently from the inner corner outward, following the natural direction of lymphatic drainage
  • Apply to the orbital bone, not directly on the lash line
  • Use both morning and night, blended into your regular moisturizer

Quick Relief

Fast Fixes for Temporary Puffiness

If the puffiness is new and tied to a bad night's sleep or too much sodium, cold is your fastest fix, a chilled jade roller, cold spoons, or a product kept in the fridge. Elevate your head while sleeping and stay hydrated. For anything that persists day to day, that's when a consistent eye cream routine becomes the real solution rather than a quick fix.

Frequently Asked

What causes puffy eyes in the morning?Fluid retention overnight, allergies, sodium intake, or poor sleep are the most common causes of morning puffiness.

Are under-eye bags different from puffiness?Yes. Puffiness is usually temporary swelling, while bags are more structural, caused by fat and collagen changes that build gradually over time.

Can eye cream really reduce under-eye bags?Consistent use of peptide and collagen-supporting eye creams can visibly improve structural bags over weeks of use, though very advanced cases may need in-office treatment.

How long before I see results?Temporary puffiness can improve within minutes with cold. Structural improvement from a consistent eye cream routine typically takes several weeks.
